Using fire extinguishers
Pull the safety pin located at the handle
Face the base of the fire, rather than the flames that have surrounded it
Squeeze the handle, and make a sweeping motion while extinguishing the fire
Types of fire extinguishers
The most common fire extinguishers are the red and black ones.
The red cylinder that contains water can be used to extinguish fires of solids such as paper, wood, or plastic. This extinguisher should not be used to extinguish flammable liquids like petrol or oil.
The black cylinder which contains CO2 is ideal for extinguishing electrical fires. However, since it does not provide post-fire security, the fire is likely to reignite.
Although less common, dry powder fire extinguishers can be used to fight all kind of fires.
